Background - Telecommunications sites and mobile phone masts

One of the major growth areas over the past 20 years has been the expansion of wireless telecommunications networks. This has resulted in a rapid increase in the number of radio base station sites (sometimes referred to as masts, aerials, mobile phone masts, telecommunications sites or telecoms sites) installed by the mobile phone network operators throughout the UK. Many property owners now receive a substantial income from mobile phone mast rents and telecoms site rents.

Until relatively recently, the main focus of the mobile phone operators was on acquiring additional sites (mobile phone masts) to improve their networks. The emphasis now is on combining network infrastructure and reducing overheads. To achieve this, a number of alliances have been formed to enable telecoms sites or mobile phone masts and network infrastructure to be shared. This is known as RAN sharing (radio access network (RAN) sharing). This change presents a number of opportunities and challenges to telecommunications operators as well as property owners and existing site providers or landlords.
